Study Title: Attitudes toward Police and Policing
You are invited to participate in a study conducted by Jeffrey Goodman, Ph.D. (Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire), Brady Palecek, and Aaron Tryhus (Undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire). This project is approved by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Institutional Review Board (see Contact Information at end of this page). We request your informed consent to be a participant in the project described below. You must be a resident of the US, 18 years of age or older, to participate in this study.
The purpose of this research is to study attitudes toward police and policing policies. Additional information about our study will be discussed with you after your participation in the study.
What will you be asked to do?
If you decide to participate, you be asked to read and answer several questions about a scenario describing a situation involving a police officer. You will also be asked about your general attitudes toward the police, social policy attitudes and several demographic questions (such as sex and race/ethnicity). It is estimated that participation in this study will take approximately 15 minutes or less.
Some participants may experience mild discomfort, akin to watching a news program, while reading the scenario. However, we believe the risks associated with participation to be minimal. Should you become upset, you may drop out of the study by closing your web browser.
By participating in this study, you will have contributed to scientific research and the advancement of our understanding of psychological theory and issues that contribute to attitudes held toward police.
Your participation is voluntary. If you agree to participate, you may choose not to answer any given questions, and you may withdraw your consent and discontinue your participation at any time. We hope that participants will feel comfortable responding to all questions, but full credit will be awarded to all participants who complete the last question in the survey.
Incentive for Participation:
If you are a UW-Eau Claire student currently enrolled in a Psychology course, you will also earn one (1) credit of research participation through the SONA system. Participants who are not UW-Eau Claire Psychology students can print off the evidence of participation form at the end of the survey. Your instructor may require or award extra credit for research participation.
Your responses are strictly confidential. The data collected will be used for research purposes only and will be reported in a group format (no individual data will be reported). Your identity will in no way be associated with your responses or behavior. Only the investigators and assigned research assistants will have access to your responses. All responses will be downloaded to a computer file and kept for a period of 5 years on a password-protected computer and will be deleted thereafter.
